ALL VISITORS AND PARENTS must report to the office to sign in for a school visitor pass. This is to ensure safety, provide accountability, support students, and respect learning.

PLAYGROUND SAFETY NOTICE

For the safety and health of our students, the playground is now closed before and after school. There has been an increased number of unsupervised students on the playground at these times and the faculty and staff are not available for supervision during these hours. We ask that students leave campus immediately after school unless they are participating in a school sponsored after school event. Also, as posted on signs around campus, there is to be no riding of scooters, skateboards, hoverboards or bikes while on campus. Thank you for your cooperation.

Established in 1933, Jefferson Elementary School (JES) occupies approximately 15 acres of beautiful real estate in Waikiki. Its facilities include regular education and special education classrooms along with a district Autism School. Approximately 400 students attend Jefferson, with a large population coming from twenty-three different countries. Jefferson’s Primary School Adjustment Program (PSAP) has received national certification from the Children’s Institute in Rochester, New York. Jefferson is one of only 13 schools statewide that have received such certification.

The hard working teachers of Jefferson Elementary continuously implement our Harcourt Trophies Reading Program, Harcourt Science Program and Everyday Math Program with fidelity. Students are guided to achieve proficiency in the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards (HCPS III) and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The school also incorporates various learning opportunities into the intervention block, using such resources as IXL Math, and Compass Learning. Teachers have received training in differentiated learning strategies, response to intervention strategies, Research Investigation Process (RIP), Edison Benchmark System, and will further their knowledge using the Northwest Evaluation Associations – Measures of Academic Progress (MAP), and Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol.

Students at Jefferson are able to receive instruction in Music, Physical Education, Library, Hawaiian Studies, and Character Education. These opportunities allow our students to experience a range of educational experiences in our hope to provide a more well rounded academic experience.

Jefferson is happy to be home to two classes from the Hawaii Community Action Program, Head Start Program.  The HCAP Head Start Program is a federally funded program that provides quality services to qualifying preschoolers and their families.

After school activities at Jefferson include the A-Plus After School Program, run by the Moiliili Community Center. and After School Extended Learning Opportunities.  The Extended Learning Opportunity program is funded through the 21st Century Learning Center grant. This free ELO program allows students to continue to work on math and reading skills while also being exposed to technology support. Students are also able to participate in the Robotics program and various Hawaiian Studies opportunities. For more information on those programs, please contact the school office.

The school has a very active School Community Council (SCC) with a focus on student welfare and achievement. The SCC is a major part of the overall leadership structure at Jefferson. Members are elected by their peers to advise the principal on specific matters that affect student achievement and school improvement. Their primary role is to participate in the process that ensures that the needs of all students are specifically addressed in the overall education plan for the school. The Academic and Financial Plan is a document that highlights the goals for the school, the programs, and the available resources to reach these goals.
